Kenneth Nelson was born on June 12, 1931 in Chicago Illinois. He studied at the University of Notre Dame receiving Bachelor's (1953), Master's (1955), and Ph.D. (1956) degrees in chemistry. After graduation Kenneth worked in the steel industry from 1957 to 1959 and served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1961. From 1961 to 1986 he was a professor of chemistry at the Chicago State University.

After retiring from teaching chemistry, Kenneth turned to art, working with wood, ceramics, glass and from 1997 with metals.
